After being enthralled by Egyptian and Greek ancient history, it seemed a logical choice to complete a degree in Near Eastern Archaeology. I loved every minute of it, especially the field trips which weren't exactly like an Indiana Jones film, but really enjoyable nonetheless.
There aren't many vacancies in that field however so decided to have my degree as a hobby instead and took a role as an IT Technician for a large solicitor firm. It didn't compare to travelling by camel across the desert, but the role allowed me to have enough flexibility to pursue my hobby and is an interest I retain today
Being involved with solicitors was eye-opening, and although the prestigious firm was great to me, I realised my vocation lay elsewhere.
I had always wanted to teach and after completing my teaching certificate threw myself into that. I specialised in the underprivileged sector and although very demanding was hugely rewarding. I do believe teaching has a shelf life and I reached mine. I looked for something which was client-focused and found my current role. It's great fun with a great team and although it's a completely different set of rules, the dealing with clients is hugely enjoyable.
I still have a passion for all things Egyptian, but the 5-star version is just as much fun!
